Kurnyuk School for Girls, Akon, South Sudan

We believe that educating women reverses the marginalization that has fueled Sudan’s bloody wars. That’s why we’re so committed to the 525 girls of this primary school in rural Akon. In December 2005, we agreed to build their permanent campus. In June 2009, we “cut the ribbon” and dedicated the new campus—replete with 8 fully furnished classrooms (yes, it’s a tight squeeze!), offices, dining facilities and latrines. However, we recognize that an excellent education certainly takes more than fine buildings! Now we’re focusing on recruiting, training and developing competent teachers to prepare Sudan’s next generation of women leaders.
