It is clear that U.S. action is needed to stop the genocide in Darfur where more than 400,000 people have been killed and the security situation is deteriorating for civilians and humanitarian organizations. An international protection force is needed to stop the violence and protect humanitarian efforts. As the only government to have publicly acknowledged the genocide, the U.S. has a unique obligation to obtain international action.

Now that the U.S. has taken the presidency of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, there is an opportunity for a resolution authorizing a UN intervention force in Darfur. U.S. leadership at the UN can protect the people of Darfur and demonstrate this country's moral leadership. We demand action now.
